Two years ago, on Hallowe’en weekend, a team of young rapscallions heralding from Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute shocked this country’s running community by finishing second at the 2008 OFSAA XC championships in Sarnia. One year later, a similar but infinitely less cool team from rivaling Sydenham High School, also in Kingston, ventured forth and met the same end at the 2009 OFSAA XC Championships on some hilly field in the burbs of Toronto.
Fast forward to the present day, November 2010. This pair of teams, once at each other’s throats, once sworn rivals--mortal enemies--have now coalesced with one common goal in mind: to take down those Windsor cusses who have, on two separate occasions, snatched up these boys’ provincial title, right from under their noses. This is OPERATION: STEALING GOLD!!!!
**insert dramatic theme music**
This is no light undertaking. In fact, it’s probably one of the most daring feats ever attempted in professional sport, even greater than the 1980 Miracle on Ice or the Iron Lotus from Blades of Glory. Without further ado, allow me to introduce to you the Physi-Kult Junior Nationals XC team.
Alexander Hinton a.k.a. A-Town
Bio: Being this pack’s alpha male, Alexander is a pillar of consistency. Having just competed at the World Junior Triathlon championships in Hungary this September, he is without a doubt the most fit he has ever been. Sure to be almost as big a threat on the course as he is on the D-floor.
Enrolled at: University of Guelph
Recent results: 16th ITU World Junior Triathlon Championships, 6th at OTFA XC Championships.
Misc notes: Spunky.
Rob Asselstine a.k.a. Robby
Bio: Everybody knows Rob was denied the opportunity for run high school XC this year. However, to clarify a common misconception, this was not because of a recent transfer but because the school board told coach Pat McDermott that potentially dangerous weapons were not permitted at school-sanctioned events. Needless to say, he’s got something to prove to himself and to the rest of Ontario.
Enrolled at: Frontenac Secondary School
Recent results: Self-appointed champion of the CIS after-party.
Misc notes: Doesn’t taper.
Evan Andrin a.k.a. Limestone Miler
Bio: When your whole team is just a bunch of goons, the title of “team goon” comes with that much more backing. What’s worse, for the adversaries anyways, is that this is a far cry from the anemic edition we saw last year. Evan’s been tearing it up all season long all the while maintaining super high volume weeks and a killer swag. Watch for his signature sneak attack over the last couple k.
Enrolled at: University of Western Ontario
Recent results: 29th at OUA XC Championships, 34th at CIS.
Misc notes: Lady killer.
Charles “The Animal” Allan
Bio: Charles’s had an inconsistent summer’s worth of training after injuring his piriformis performing undisclosed, but probably scandalous, activities. Since his return, the only calculations this engineer-in-training has been performing is how to maximize the amount of butt he kicks.
Enrolled at: University of Waterloo
Recent results: 30th at OUA XC Championships, 55th at CIS.
Misc notes: Hockey player -- watch out for him in the corners.
Jeff “The Other Animal” Archer
Bio: Jeff’s season has been a tad disappointing, but when he is “on” he can roll with the best of them. Always counted on by his teammates and never counted out by his opponents, he’ll stand apart from the crowd at this year’s dance and it won’t just be because of those nifty orange arm warmers of his.
Enrolled at: Queen’s University
Recent results: 43rd at OUA XC Championships, 69th at CIS.
Misc notes: VO2 max of a horse.
Dylan O’Sullivan a.k.a. D. O’Sull
Bio: Has battled injury troubles this season. No one will be 100% whereabouts he’ll finish when he toes the line championship weekend. But if he keeps it in his pants this week, or his compression short more appropriately, he’ll be one of the team’s heavy hitters no doubt.
Enrolled at: Sydenham Secondary School
Recent results: 36th at OFSAA XC Championships, 11th at OTFAs.
Misc notes: Dope free stylist.
These six are joined by young up-and-comers Blair “The Mauler” Morgan, Cam “The Vac” Levac, as well as a slew of Kingston’s other youngest and finest aerobic monsters, all ready to rock n’ roll.
How does Windsor match up to this elite squad? Stay tuned to find out.
I believe!
